Oak panels of the best quality

Oak panels come in many qualities. You have to pay attention to many things for a good estimate of the quality. At eikenpanelen.nl we have chosen the very best quality you can get on the market: beautiful wide continuous slats with a width of approx. 12 - 17 cm, so without finger joints or other longitudinal welds. It also happens that the panels are constructed from slats with so-called "falling widths" (different widths), on request we can take your wishes into account during the production process. The oak panels are made exclusively from European oak from the summer and winter oak, respectively the Quercus robur and the Quercus petraea. Looking for a nice deal? We now have our oak narrow slat panels very competitively priced! Slightly narrower than our normal panels, but at least as strong and robust as its wider brother!

Oak panels in 3 thicknesses: 18, 30 and 40 mm

Eikenpanelen.nl makes oak panels in three standard thicknesses, namely 18 mm, 30 mm and 40 mm. Oak carpentry panels of 18 mm are often used for kitchen doors of solid oak. A 30 mm thick oak carpentry panel is a very suitable thickness for wall shelves, furniture and TV furniture and, provided it is well supported, also for table tops. Oak carpentry panels of 40 mm thick are ideal for use as a table top, especially somewhat longer table tops or table tops with less support.

Three optical qualities of oak panels

The technical quality of our oak panels is all the same, but the optical quality is divided into three classes:

  • Oak AB quality : these light rustic oak panels have almost no knots, very small pits up to approx. 10 mm are allowed but these are usually not or hardly there. The visible side of the oak panel has an A-quality, the back an A or B-quality. Available in 18 mm AB oak carpentry panels , is widely used for (kitchen) doors . 30 mm oak AB carpentry panels , perfect for bathroom furniture and 40 mm AB oak carpentry panels can be used for beautiful table tops.
  • Oak BB quality : these average rustic oak panels have knots up to approx. 4 cm that are usually closed. Sometimes there are small cracks or fissures in these knots. If you prefer not to have these, there is the option to have the oak panels filled with an approximately similar colored filler of liquid wood, you can check this option when ordering. Available in 18 mm oak BB carpentry panels perfect for shelves in a cupboard , 30mm Oak BB Carpentry Panels  often used for wall shelves and 40 mm oak BB carpentry panels good for kitchen countertops, among other things .
  • Oak CO quality : this concerns rustic oak panels with a fair number of knots that can also be larger than approx. 4 cm. The pattern is nice and rough, this is the most natural variant with many knots and colour differences, which makes the panel look beautifully natural. Knots often show open cracks and fissures that you leave open for an optimal natural effect or have them filled with approximately the same colour filler for greater ease of use. Available in 18 mm oak CO carpentry panels , very good for finishing your furniture or the 30 mm oak CO carpentry panels that are perfect for kitchen cabinets, for example, and the 40 mm oak CO carpentry panels do very well as a beautiful, robust table top.

FCS certified

The Utrecht-based wood factory of Eikenpanelen.nl is also FSC-certified. Ideal if you work for governments or other agencies that require this FSC label in their specifications. This does not mean that every panel carries the FSC label, only panels that are specified as such on the invoice are actually FSC-certified. We make these FSC oak panels to measure for you, ask us about the possibilities.

Quality of the bonding

Although oak panels are mainly used indoors, Eikenpanelen.nl has opted for a D4 bonding according to the NNI standard NEN-EN 204. This means that the quality of the bonding is also sufficiently guaranteed in a situation of a temporary increase in relative humidity (RH). Nevertheless, Eikenpanelen.nl advises you not to expose oak panels to humid conditions for a long time, because this can significantly reduce the attractive appearance of the oak, especially if it is untreated (unprotected) oak. Especially in the latter case, brown spots can appear on the subfloor due to leaching of the tannins (for example during rainfall). We use the 2-component lacquer from Skylt for finishing. This is colourless and protects your carpentry panel well.

Wood moisture content

The oak for Eikenpanelen.nl is always artificially dried in advance to a wood moisture content of 10-12% (m/m). Drying mainly takes place in renowned Dutch wood drying facilities.

Oak panels and moisture, how does it work exactly?

Wood is a hygroscopic material. This means that wood will absorb moisture (and therefore expand) when it comes into contact with moist air and will release moisture (and therefore shrink) when it comes into contact with drier air. This alternating expansion and shrinkage is called “the working” of wood. And one thing is certain, wood will always continue to work, even if it lives for a hundred years or more.

The relative humidity (RH) of the air around us is constantly changing. This can be easily observed with a hygrometer. Under normal circumstances, the relative humidity indoors fluctuates between 50 and 70%. Under these conditions, wood will retain a wood moisture content (HV) of between 10 and 12% (at a temperature of ±18°C).

The oak of your panel has therefore been carefully artificially dried in advance to a wood moisture content of 10 to 12%. This means that the wood moisture content of your oak panel is normally nicely in balance with the relative humidity in your home. Under these circumstances, the panel will therefore hardly or very little work. It is best to cover your panels on both sides when you store them and store them horizontally, well supported.

Let's take a table top as an example: if we ensure that the wood moisture content on the top of the panel remains the same as the wood moisture content on the bottom of the panel, the panel will remain flat. If we only apply a moisture-resistant (lacquer) layer to one side (the top), this balance will be disrupted. If the relative humidity rises, the top of the panel will absorb less moisture than the unprotected bottom. The result will be that the unlacquered bottom of the panel will expand more than the lacquered top, causing the panel to become hollow. That is why it is so important to apply the same number of oil or lacquer layers to the bottom of the panel when oiling or lacquering a panel. This keeps everything in balance and the panel will remain flat.

When used as a self-supporting element, such as kitchen doors and the like, you should always provide a solid wooden panel with sturdy clamps on one side (usually the back). This prevents disappointments due to warping as a result of long-term unevenness in moisture content on the outside and inside of the kitchen cabinets.

Edge and other finishes

Eikenpanelen.nl can apply all kinds of edge and other finishes to the oak panels on request. Think of a radius of a few mm's as desired or a facet edge, which can often be done for very little extra cost.

Further finishing of the panel

The panels are sanded on both sides with sanding grit size P100. The end edges are cut square (finely sawn), the long edges are untreated and nice and straight. It can sometimes happen that the panel you ordered has a small oversize, the price remains the same. If there is a larger available oversize, we will consult with you and make you an interesting offer.

Firewood from residual oak wood

At Droomhout we think about the environment and try to be as sustainable as possible. For example, we do not just throw away residual wood, but we make a package of firewood from it. When collected, it is nice dry wood that is ready for use and burns for a long time! Better for nature and fun for you.
